Who Advises the Advisors? Young Adult Perspectives on Advising at Minority Serving Institutions

Published: May 15, 2026

About the Report

Young Invincibles is a national nonprofit organization focused on amplifying the voices of young adults in the political process across higher education, workforce development, healthcare, and civic engagement.

As an ASN Partner, Young Invincibles conducted this mixed-methods study to examine undergraduate students’ experiences with academic advising at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). By centering student perspectives, the project explores how advising structures, institutional contexts, and advisor-student interactions influence:

  • access
  • support
  • persistence
  • student success

The study identifies both barriers to effective advising and practices that support holistic, student-centered experiences, positioning advising as a critical equity mechanism within Minority Serving Institutions.

The Advising Success Network, an initiative of NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, is proud to fund this project.
