2024 Collaborative Holistic Advising in Action Case Studies

Published: December 3, 2025

Since 2018, NASPA–Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education has housed the Advising Success Network (ASN), a network of national partner organizations working to support holistic advising redesign activities in the pursuit of more personalized and equity-centered experiences for all learners, including Black, Latinx/a/o, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, and poverty-affected students.

This case study collection is a synthesis of key highlights and insights gained from NASPA’s engagement in the ASN 2024–2025 Cohort of six institutions undergoing advising redesign:

  • Albany State University
  • Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University
  • H. Councill Trenholm State Community College
  • Lawson State Community College
  • Morgan State University
  • Pierce College District

This report spotlights each cohort institution’s advising redesign goals and lessons learned, while highlighting a snapshot of a student experience on the campus to illustrate the role of advising as part of a student’s success journey. Across the six institutions engaged in this ASN Cohort experience, advising professionals took on the ambitious work of transforming advising systems to advance equitable student success. Advising redesign as a full-campus project can serve as a platform for larger institutional strategies and can support learning among peers. The experiences of this cohort offer valuable insights for others also looking to serve as both implementers and leaders of advising redesign. When colleges and universities use student-centered advising as a strategic anchor, learn in community with peers, and engage with external thought partners, they create conditions that foster lasting change.
