We are proud to publish recommendations for academic organizations serving students, either directly or indirectly, developed by Advising Success Network Fellows Jasmine Baldwin, Xavier Raphael Ortiz, and Danielle White.
Over the last few months the Advising Success Network had the opportunity to work with a team of undergraduate and graduate students attending different institutions as part of the very first cohort of ASN Student Fellows. As part of the student fellows’ experiences, they worked on group research projects related to racial equity and advising, and developed student-facing overviews of their final papers about their studies.
Jasmine Baldwin, Xavier Raphael Ortiz, and Danielle White applied their diverse and intersectional higher education experiences through a lens of racial equity to analyze equitable student representation on five ASN partner organization websites. Together, they assessed the sites using the Equity-Minded Inquiry Series Web Scan, created by USC Rossier School of Education to evaluate portrayal of and commitment to equitable language, images, and student-centered initiatives. With their findings, they developed recommendations for these organizations and the broader field to implement, that will convey the mission toward “equity and student success.”

About the Authors:
- Jasmine Baldwin (they/them) is a third year undergraduate student at Sam Houston State University, where they major in Mathematics and Education with a minor in Special Education. Jasmine works as a Peer Mentor on campus and plans to attend graduate school to study Data Science.
- Xavier Raphael Ortiz (he/him) was born in the Philippines and is currently a transfer student at Bowie State University, where he plans to major in English or Communications with the ultimate goal of becoming an academic advisor.
- Danielle White (she/her) is a third year undergraduate student at The George Washington University, where she majors in International Affairs with a focus in development and a minor in Sociocultural Anthropology. In the future, she hopes to pursue a career that promotes educational development.
